The third day of the 2000 Advanta Championships showcased the top three seeds in their inagural second round matches. All three received first round byes. Top seed Martina Hingis would face young wild card Russian, Elena Bovina, second seed Lindsay Davenport faced hometown gal and fellow American, Lisa Raymond and third seed, Spain's Conchita Martinez would play Canadian player Renata Kolbovic. Wednesday Final First Round Action (8) Jennifer Capriati def. Meghann Shaughnessy 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 In the first singles match of the day, this pitted two Americans who had met only one time before, on the grass at Wimbledon. Because of her many previous appearances at the Advanta, Jennifer Capriati had the support of the crowd behind her. Meghann Shaughnessy stuck to her game plan and took the first set at 3. Capriati had a second wind about her and fought a tough second set and came back to take decisive third set. Second Round Action (1) Martina Hingis def. (WC) Elena Bovina 6-4, 6-1 The tournament's number one seed and world ranked number one, Martina Hingis had her hands cut out for her against young 17 year old Russian, Elena Bovina. Hingis brought a 14-match win streak into this match. Her last loss was to Venus Williams in the semifinals at the US Open. Bovina has enjoyed some success of her own on the ITF Challenger Circuit, winning three tournaments in England. Her ranking has also improved from 392 at the beginning of the year to a present day number 148. Hingis's game was tested in the first set however, she prevailed with relative ease winning in 1 and 4. (3) Conchita Martinez def. LL Renata Kolbovic 6-1, 6-3 Third seed Conchita Martinez had no trouble disposing of her Canadian opponent. The Martinez topspin caused all sorts of having for Kolbovic and she succumbed in straight sets. (2) Lindsay Davenport def. Lisa Raymond 6-2, 6-3 In the headline night match, pitted local gal Lisa Raymond against fellow American and good friend Lindsay Davenport. Davenport's serve was not broken once by Raymond. Nothing that she could throw into the mix against Lindsay would faze the second seed. Davenport ended Raymond's "homecoming" in straight sets. Amanda Coetzer def. Jennifer Hopkins 6-3, 6-0 During the final match of the evening, the ever powerful but petite South African had no trouble ousting her 19 year old American opponent. Coetzer dominated the match with her server and groundstrokes. Hopkins had no answer to the Coetzer game. In doubles action, number one seeded team, Julie Halard-Decugis defeated Kim Grant/Maria Vento 7-5, 7-5. Number two seeds Martina Hingis/Anna Kournikova upended the young team of Elena Bovina/Daniela Hantuchova 6-3, 6-0. |
