by Prip Daja came into this match looking like she had absolutely no game plan at all. She had been on an outside court hitting with her father just before the match, and instead of blasting the balls at her, he was simply pushing them across the net and getting her to hit with a little more topspin (if I understood correctly), which isn't exactly what you want to do against a Williams sister. Despite the respectable looking 6-2 score, the youngster was absolutely blitzed in the first set. Her first serve percentage was dismal throughout the match, although it picked up in the second, and her second serve was simply being eaten up by Serena. When she did manage to get her first serves in, she made life so much easier for herself, and won a considerable number of the points. Serena also started to miss her shots a little more in the second, at which Daja picked up her own game. The flashes of brilliance were there, but they were only flashes. Serena clearly overpowered her opponent, but Daja Bedanova has impressed a lot of people in this tournament, and will continue to impress. With a little bit of work on her footspeed and a physical strength, the youngster will soon be a major contender on the tour. Williams looked somewhat relieved to wrap up a 6-2, 6-2 win. |
