by Prip Amidst scheduling chaos and disorganization, Saturday saw both the men and ladies in qualifying action. Fortunately, on the men's side, there was only one replacement made in the draw, where top seed Slava Dosedel was replaced by Marc-Kevin Goellner. The seeds in the first half of the draw all got through comfortably, but the seeds in the lower half nearly all suffered losses. Ivan Ljubicic fell to doubles specialist Kevin Ullyett in a tough match, losing 2-6 6-4 7-6(6), while big Alexander Popp of Germany fell to Galo Blanco 6-3 6-2. Americans Chris Woodruff, Paul Goldstein, and Jeff Tarango all made it through to the final round of qualifying, as did # 3 seed Christophe Rochus and wild card Scott Draper. It's been a good showing thus far for Draper, who looks to improve his ranking after playing a limited schedule in 2000. Day two of qualifying saw yet more replacements in the women's qualifying draw. Giulia Casoni, fifth seed, was replaced by Maria Elena Camerin of Italy and Janette Husarova was replaced by Vanessa Henke of Germany. (Casoni and Husarova were busy winning a doubles title together at the Gold Coast tournament.) Both of the fill-ins failed to make the most of their luck, falling to Maria Alejandra Vento 6-2 6-3 and Angelika Bachmann 7-6(4) 4-6 7-6(4) respectively. The match between Alice Canepa and Louise Latimer finally got completed after being suspended due to rain the previous day. Louise started the match leading 6-4 2-1 (40-30) and played hard-hitting tennis to send her opponent scrambling all over the court. The bottom line seems to be that the Italian simply doesn't have enough experience in the big tournaments yet. The main thing that kept her in the match is her unconventional yet strong serve. She plays a similar but less effective style to her good friend Tathiana Garbin, not an easy thing to get with against the top players, and unless miracles happen, it will be a while before we see anything of her (on the court). The only surprise of the day was Bryanne Stewart who defeated Martina Sucha 7-5 6-2, almost too easily. Perhaps building up for a repeat of her performance in Melbourne last year, the Aussie wildcard faces top seed Nadejda Petrova in the final qualifying round. Tina Pisnik, Erika de Lone, Aubrie Rippner and Elena Bovina all also made it into the final round. Women's Singles Qualifying First Round:
