In the women's main draw, Jennifer Capriati survived against Tatiana Panova to advance to the second round. Barbara Schett had an easier time, coming through 6-2 6-4 against Gala Leon Garcia. The Austrian will play second seed Lindsay Davenport next. Meghann Shaughnessy didn't fare so well, falling to hard-serving Aussie Alicia Molik 6-1 7-6(1). The American had come unraveled at the local crowd support as well as an unfortunate string of little incidents that combined to frustrate her. With rain playing havoc on play all day, Tina Pisnik would have to wait another day for her match against Kim Clijsters, giving her a day of rest.
