Mixed Fortunes for the Williams Sisters
by Prip
The Williams sisters are undoubtedly close -- they're each other's
best friend, and probably do most things together. Today, both
sisters were involved in thrilling three-set battles, both going to
8-6 in the final, but while Venus fought
back from the brink of death, Serena fell
from the heavens. Martina managed to jump the first hurdle, but not
without a huge struggle, and will have less than 24 hours to prepare
for the next. She has not been able to beat both sisters in the same
tournament in her three attempts, but maybe fourth time will be lucky for
her. With her performance against Serena and Venus's performance
against Amanda, the odds certainly favour the top seed to finally
break through. Meanwhile no one will know what to expect between
Lindsay Davenport and Jennifer Capriati. Lindsay definitely looked
lackluster in her previous match, while Jennifer's sudden athleticism
will give her a big edge against the second seed.
In the men's draw, the seeds continue to fall, and fifth seed Yevgeny
Kafelnikov will remember his match against Frenchman Arnaud Clement
for the rest of his life. Arnaud's victory will mean an
all-French semifinal, guaranteeing that country a man in the final. Joining him is
Sebastien Grosjean, who was absolutely stunning against Carlos Moya,
winning 6-1 6-4 6-2 with hardly a fight from Carlos. Despite Arnaud
having a 2-1 record against his best friend as well as winning their
previous encounter, I would have to give the edge to Sebastien to get
through to meet Andre Agassi in the final.
With rain putting a halt to the junior matches on the outside courts,
and the main matches being shifted to the Vodafone Arena, tomorrow's
schedule will be heavier than originally planned, and hopefully, the
rain will let up a little. While Yevgeny and Arnaud were battling it
out in the Rod Laver Arena, Barbara Schett and Joshua Eagle found
themselves in an empty Vodafone Arena, struggling against Mark
Knowles and Nicole Arendt. Schett/Eagle prevailed in the deciding
tiebreak and will next meet the experienced, top-seeded tandem of
Rennae Stubbs and Todd Woodbridge.
