Pozzi and Capriati Shine on a Rainy Monday
by Prip
The first match of the day would showcase a talented veteran against a
player who makes him look like a kid by comparison. Morocco's
Younes El Aynaoui was drawn against the oldest man in the Top 100, Gianluca
Pozzi. Experience and skill got the Italian through comfortably in
straight sets. Meanwhile, crafty Fabrice Santoro ousted dangerous
David Prinosil of Germany by a 6-3 6-3 count. Another German was more
fortunate, as Rainer Schuttler beat Slava Dosedel after a slight
hiccup, taking that match 6-3 3-6 6-3.
In the women's main draw, Jennifer Capriati
survived against Tatiana Panova to advance to the second round.
Barbara Schett had an easier time, coming through 6-2 6-4 against
Gala Leon Garcia. The Austrian will play second seed Lindsay Davenport next.
Meghann Shaughnessy didn't fare so well, falling to hard-serving
Aussie Alicia Molik 6-1 7-6(1). The American had come unraveled at
the local crowd support as well as an unfortunate string of little
incidents that combined to frustrate her.
With rain playing havoc on play all day, Tina Pisnik would have to
wait another day for her match against Kim Clijsters, giving her a
day of rest. Her good friend Jelena Kostanic's preparation would also
go to waste, as her doubles match with Erika de Lone against Anna
Kournikova and Barbara Schett was also canceled to make way for the
evening matches on Centre Court.
