Capriati and Schnyder Headline Rainy Sunday
by Prip
A lot of matches had been abandoned on Saturday, and would be completed on
Sunday. Conchita Martinez had been able to finish her match against
Jelena Kostanic, a 6-4 6-4 victory against the young Croatian. The newbie basically
made a whole lot of rookie errors, committing a total of 47 unforced errors
to 34 from Conchita. The two were pretty much even on the number of winners,
but Martinez only had a couple of double-faults compared to about 6 or so
from Jelena. Conchita came through in the crunch, and played the important
points well, taking all but one of her five break points and giving the
Croatian only 2 of 7. All in all, this was a pretty good showing from the
Croatian in her second Grand Slam appearance, topping her previous and only
Grand Slam showing (she reached the second round at the U.S Open last year).
I don't think that she'll have much trouble reaching her target ranking for
the year. In fact, I think she's got a good chance to make the top 50 by the
time the French Open is over.
The two players in the first feature match of the day had more in common
than meets the eye. Both have had well-documented problems in their teen
lives, although Jennifer Capriati was touted to be a future number one throughout most of
her life while Patty Schnyder rose through the rankings in relative obscurity, in
part due to her compatriot Martina Hingis making splashes. Jen has only
one way to go, and that's to hit the ball as hard as possible. On the other
hand, Patty has the ability to use the court well, and has the quirky
swinging serve characteristic of the lefties on tour. Jennifer looked strong
in the first set, although quite a number of her shots were spraying all
over the place. Patty Schnyder was a little relaxed in the first set, but
managed to capitalize on Jen's errant shots in the second set. Many say that
Jennifer is far from her game when she was a pimply kid lost on the tour,
but the situation is more that hard baseline hitters are a dime a dozen now,
and as sad as it may sound, Jen's old standard is just not enough to cut it
nowadays. The good thing is that she is working with a real coach, and is
expanding her game a little more. She can still get somewhere on her
consistency, which she is working and improving on day by day, but the top
four is a little out of reach with just that.
Anyway, Schnyder is still on the way back after her bad decision last year,
and couldn't take it all the way. After saving the second set, she meekly
bowed out 6-1 in the third, and Jennifer booked herself a place in the round
of 16. Her next opponent would be the winner of the Pierce/Sugiyama match.
Either one will be a pretty big challenge. Mary was still having a great
time at the Open, able to keep her mind on the game long enough to wrap it
up. She was yet to drop a set in the tournament, although if any had gone
the distance, she would have a better chance to get through than she would
have had 2 years ago. Despite the mental struggles she's gone through, Mary
has recently proven that she can hold on when she's down in a match. Of
course, the most recent of this feat was at the Chase Championships when
Anna had match points against her, and lost in three sets.
The rest of the featured matches were the doubles, with Jelena Dokic and
Jennifer Capriati due to finish their match against Karina Habsudova and
Anne-Gaelle Sidot. They got through that match, and were drawn to meet what
used to be one of the best doubles teams in the world, Alexandra Fusai and
Nathalie Tauziat. With Alexandra tumbling down the rankings the previous
year, the two had hardly played any events together. It's good to see that
they still play with each other whenever possible. Alexandra had a pretty
good showing at the Aussie Open in singles, making it through the qualifying
rounds before falling to forever under-ranked Lisa Raymond in the first
round. Maybe she'll be able to move back up the rankings to play regular
doubles with her countrywoman before Nathalie retires from the tour.
In a surprise result, Debbie Graham and Nana Miyagi took their rain-delayed
match against Irina Spirlea and Caroline Vis. They will meet another
surprise pair, Tathiana Garbin and Katalin Marosi, who had had an extra day
off waiting for their opponents to be decided.
Monday would also see the juniors in action. The youngsters had already been
out and about, and could be seen hanging around the tournament control area,
locker rooms and practice courts. Some were having hitting sessions with
pros that had a little free time, gauging their standards. Hopefully, the
weather will pick up soon.
