Thursday, July 27, 2000 Day Matches: Anna Kournikova (RUS) def. Jana Nejedly (CAN) 6-1, 6-0 Anna was first on court today to play her 2nd round match again Canada's Jana Nejedly. This one turned out to be another easy run for the oh-so-popular Anna here at Stanford. Right away she ran away with a 3-0 lead. Then something must have happened to Jana, for she called for a trainer and took a three minute allotted medical time out. After Nejedly returned onto the court, she managed to win just one game and lost the first set 1-6. The 2nd sent was just as disastrous for Jana losing it at love. In this 44 minute match, Nejedly provided little challenge to her opponent by rarely hitting winners and frequently spraying errors. To rub salt in the wound, Anna was perfect in her break point conversions. Plus, she served 72% and made only 2 double faults. Her next opponent will be a lot tougher though, France's Sandrine Testud. Black (ZIM) def. Coetzer (RSA) 6-2, 6-1 Amanda Coetzer of South Africa went head to head with Zimbabwe's Cara Black. Coetzer stepped into the match being the obvious favorite, but that changed right away when she fell behind 0-2. However, being her feisty self, she rallied back on serve to 2-3 only to lose her service game to go down 2-4. From then on, she failed to win another game in the first set and lost it at 2-6. In the 2nd set, Coetzer was worst off. Although she put up a fight, her score does not show it. She lost the set 1-6. During the match Coetzer only produced 8 winner verses Black's 29 while their number of unforced errors were pretty much the same. And, Coetzer only converted 1 of her 4 break chances, while Black broke her 5 times. After the match, Cara Black expressed that this match ranks up there as one of her best wins. Next up: Monica Seles. Doubles: Rubin (USA)/Testud (FRA) def. Jidkova (RUS) / Washington (USA) 6-2, 6-4 Lastra (USA)/ Tokuda (USA) def. Nejedly (CAN)/ Tu (USA) 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-4 Night Matches Davenport (USA) def. Pratt (AUS) 6-2, 6-4 Nicole Pratt was not up to the challenge of the number one seed tonight. Lindsay immediately jumped to a 3-0 lead. Between points Nicole often tried to pump herself up by hopping around. But she wasn't able to loosen up in time. Lindsay ran away with the set 5-2. In the 2nd, Nicole stayed much closer to her competitor. At one point she was up 4-2. But Lindsay was able to win 4 straight games to win the match. Even though Lindsay finished off the night with a W, she was not playing to her full potential. Her 1st serve percentage is merely 52%, 7 aces, 5 double faults, and interestingly, 6 foot faults. Frazier (USA) def. Brandi (USA) 7-6(1), 6-0 This match was an extremely exciting one during the first set, however, the second set was a let down. The first set was full of break of serves. Brandi did actually have a chance to serve out the set, but she was broken. The two players stayed right on top of each other forcing the set into a tiebreaker. By then, Amy went on a streaming roll. She won the set 7-1 and the next set 6-0. Brandi was unable to turn around her opponent's momentum. Doubles: Clijsters/Shaughnessy def. Coetzer/McNeil 7-6(5), 6-3 |
