This update includes this late match from Thursday:

  • Juan Ignacio Chela def. Lleyton Hewitt (3)

Overall standings

The Overall lead changes hands again, and Larry Yonce is the man today!

Larry lost 6 points, but on a day of plunging scores that was good enough to send him past yesterday's leader Frederick Warburg. Remembering that today's update contains yesterday's Hewitt loss, Frederick lost an astonishing 12 points (5 with S.Williams, 3 with Hewitt, 2 with Gaudio, and 1 each with Ancic & Blake).

While Larry also lost 3 points with Hewitt, he wisely limited his damage to 1 point each with Williams, Blake and Gaudio. He also sagely avoided Ancic, opting instead for the triumphant Ferrer.

Just a point back sit my two guarantors, Chris Gerby and Bill Walsh, and Yoonho Ji. I'd like to mention that Bill made an excellent jump from 11th place, on the strength of losing just 2 points with Hewitt and none with Williams.

Men's draw

Yesterday's leader Peter Versteege has a faulty Friday, and the lead is now shared by a fearsome foursome!

Our Heartbreaker of the Day is the holdover from yesterday's late match that is included on today's update:

Juan Ignacio Chela

Hewitt's poor form at Adelaide and Sydney was not an illusion as it turns out. Chela avenged his loss to Hewitt at last year's AO with an expectoration-free four-set win. Since Hewitt was a common semifinal pick, many scores suffered. The Argentine next plays Vliegen for a place in the final sixteen.

Peter was not especially harmed by Hewitt, since most of us lost 3 points there and he lost just 2. It was Peter's expectation that Ancic would reach the final that really did him in.

J Stewart did the best of our leading quartet by losing 3 points -- all with Hewitt -- and rising up from 28th place. J's perspicacious picks of Santoro (who beat Gaudio), and the unpopular (contest-wise) Spanish seeds Ferrer (who took out Ancic) and Robredo (who eliminated Blake) were quite helpful.

Tomorrow's key third-rounder:

Nicolas Kiefer (GER)[21] vs. Juan Carlos Ferrero (ESP)[15]:
Ferrero has rebounded well from his bienniel loss to Guccione in Sydney to make the anticipated date with Kiefer. The German was picked by 37 of us for the round of sixteen.

Women's draw

We have a 5-way tie for first!

Another eventful day sees yesterday's co-leaders Craig Willeford and Mark Langley slip, primarily thanks to the loss of S.Williams to Hantuchova. Craig didn't fare too badly, losing just one point with Serena and falling into a tie with four contestants who picked Hantuchova to reach the round of sixteen.

Tomorrow's key third-rounder:

Nicole Vaidisova (CZE)[16] vs. Flavia Pennetta (ITA)[20]:
Many are saying that young Vaidisova might go deep in the women's draw. Gold Coast runner-up Pennetta, chosen by 14 of us, should test the teenager's ambitions.
